Jim Goldberg, Autumn/Winter 2021

In June 2021, artist Jim Goldberg shot a series of portraits for BOYY’s AW21 campaign. The project is an homage to the photographer’s seminal work Rich and Poor, in which he documented and interviewed individuals of varying circumstances in San Francisco over a nearly decade-long period between 1977 and 1985. The AW21 campaign series offers a poetic glimpse into the inner realms of a diverse assembly of New York City creatives.

Cast by Midland Agency in collaboration with Goldberg, the portraits capture a spectrum of emerging and established artists whose perspectives underscore BOYY’s genderfluid approach to design and core ethos rooted in celebrating individual expression. The campaign features Collier Schorr, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Efron Danzig, Hawa Sahko, Franklin Ayzenberg, Jack Pierson and Kunle Martins.

Goldberg’s portraits transcend the notions of traditional documentary photography by fostering a fluid and collaborative environment for subjects to share their own personal accounts. For the campaign series, Goldberg asked subjects a series of questions about their dreams, desires, and relationship to their own image. The resulting images, overlaid with handwritten text penned during these conversations, offer a layered and deeply intimate narrative surrounding personal reflections on gender and identity.

Jim Goldberg (b. 1953) is an American photographer and writer. The artist’s work broadens the notions of documentary photography, illustrating neglected subcultures through image, collage, and handwritten personal text from conversations with his subjects. Highlighting populations on the fringes of mainstream society, Goldberg’s multidisciplinary and collaborative works examine myths of class, power, and happiness. His work appears in several private and public collections across the U.S., including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Getty, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is the recipient of several awards including three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship (1985), the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award (2007), and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize (2011). The artist is represented by Magnum Photos, and his editorial work has appeared in W, Details, Flaunt, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rebel, GQ, The New Yorker, and Dazed & Confused.

THE CENTER
As part of BOYY’s commitment to celebrating all gender identities and expressions, the brand has pledged its ongoing support to New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center), a community center based in New York City that fosters a welcoming environment where everyone is celebrated for who they are and provides LGBTQ communities with essential resources including health and wellness programs; arts and cultural events; recovery, parenthood, and family support services. BOYY’s contribution will help to fund The Center’s community-based National History Archive and programming to offer LGBTQ communities the tools they need to thrive and lead healthy, successful lives.
